The Car Donation Process

The car donation process is simple: Call the charity and someone will come and pick up your vehicle, or tell you where to bring it. However, with so many charities to choose from and so many people trying to scam the innocent, picking the right organization is not always easy.

What to Do First

Before you donate your car to charity, the IRS advises that you:
Research the charity.
See if you will receive a tax benefit for your donation.
Look up the value of your car (however, you can only deduct the actual amount the charity sells your car for).
Ask if you, as a donor, have any other responsibilities.
In addition, you may want to consider:
How will your car be used?
Will the money from the sale of your car be used locally or outside of your community?
Which programs or services within the charity will receive funding from the sale?
What is the efficiency rating of the charity? (A lower rating means more of your donation goes toward administrative costs, not to the programs and services you want to support.)
For more information on this and tax-related matters, read the IRS's A Donor's Guide to Vehicle Donations.

Finding a Charity

Forbes ranks America's 200 Largest Charities and, in some cases, discloses their financial details, which may help you make informed donating decisions. Be sure to visit the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in your area, if you are interested in local charities. Or the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.

Notice of Transfer

Be sure to visit our guide to Title Transfers to learn how to transfer the title over.

Tax Write-Off

The IRS has clamped down on how much you can write off on donated cars. No longer can you submit a vehicle's full value. Now, instead, you can only claim the amount for which it is sold.

Where to Donate Your Car

The choice is yours. But before donating your car, confirm that your charity of choice is recognized by the IRS. Otherwise, your deduction will be rejected. If in doubt, check the IRS's Publication 78. It lists qualified charities; religious organizations aren't listed, though they do qualify. Or, either contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in your area or the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.

If you're still undecided, Forbes ranks America's 200 Largest Charities and, in some cases, discloses their financial details. Keep in mind, however, that not every charity listed here accepts car donations.

How to Cancel Plates and Tags

The laws for this vary by state. Some states require surrendering the vehicle's license plates to the DMV. Others require submitting a sold notice. And there are a few states that require no formal notification at all.

Check with your DMV for requirements.

Vehicle Donation Q&A with Twyla Olson
Q. What should I look for in a vehicle donation program?
A. We suggest you look for happy vehicle donors, the best returns possible, high-quality service and complete transparency.  Car Talk VDS offers all that and then some!  We're pleased to provide stations with three customized options:
          1)   Local, custom branding to fit the needs of NPR and music stations;
          2)   Car Talk-branded program;
          3)   PBS program featuring exclusive donor spots and messaging for TV.

Q. Who’s minding my donors?
A. We are! A great vehicle donation program is about more than just monthly revenue. It’s about donor service, too!  We make sure you get the best sales price possible for each and every donated car while ensuring a great donor experience. We understand how hard it is to attract and keep donors and how important it is to set the stage for a long-term relationship.  We drive the extra mile!
For example, we took a classic 1947 Packard to a special auction for a major MPR donor living in New Hampshire; we figured out how a WPLN member in Nashville could donate a 2010 Toyota stored in Toronto; we towed an RV for a KUHF board member before the cops towed it for him; and we even brought a WBEZ lapsed member back into the fold when he found himself the high bidder for Tom Magliozzi’s Fiat Spider convertible—and wrote a check to WBEZ for nearly $5,000.
It’s vitally important to have a vehicle donation program that understands how your station operates, and what motivates the audience and donors. Our public broadcasting-centric staff of Twyla Olson, Cari Ness Nesje, Katie Kemple, Beth Carter and Doug Mayer have a combined 70 years in public radio.
Q. Can we use Car Talk VDS, even if we don't air Car Talk?
A. Car Talk VDS is the best vehicle donation program out there -- whether you carry Car Talk or not.  In fact, we have many clients at PBS and classical music stations that have never aired Car Talk.
• We deliver a higher revenue percentage to stations than our top competitor
• Local branding options, featuring real donors, keep the focus on your listeners and community.
• NPR partners with Car Talk VDS exclusively on vehicle donation support for stations -- from npr.org web tiles and podcast pre-rolls, to vehicle donation mailers in orders leaving The NPR Shop, to promos featuring NPR celebrity voices.  NPR provides this at no additional cost -- all net proceeds are passed to stations.
Q. What about fees?
A. Whomever you work with, demand total transparency in the fee structure, and make sure the structure makes good sense to you.  Why? Because your members are smart and you treat them as such when you raise money. You tell them where pledge dollars go and what programming costs.  We suggest taking the same approach with your vehicle donation program. You’re putting hard-won donors in someone else's hands. Protect them by insisting on a VDS that understands the value of transparency.We’re sure you have more questions. Give us a call!Twyla Olson, Director of Business Development, 651-587-6332, twyla@cartalkvds.com.

Charities Regulated by the Motor Vehicle Administration to Accept Donated Vehicles
The charity to which you may want to donate a vehicle must be licensed as a Maryland wholesale dealer. Wholesale dealers may not sell vehicles to a retail buyer. A list of charities that are licensed wholesale vehicle dealers follows. The title of the vehicle must be properly assigned to the charity. This is handled in the same manner as if you were actually selling the vehicle.
Be sure to fill in the name and the address of the charity under the "Assignment of Ownership" section to properly complete the transfer of ownership of the vehicle to the charity. Some charities may request that you leave the new owner information blank, but this leaves you at risk for future problems since the title would then be considered "open" by the MVA and unassigned. It may also affect your tax deduction for the donation.
Before you allow the charity to take your vehicle away, please remove the license plates from the vehicle and return them to the MVA. To avoid uninsured motorist fees, hold onto the receipt you will receive for the plates, and cancel your automobile insurance after you have returned the license plates
Giving the Vehicle as a Gift
If the vehicle is being given as a gift, and an exemption from excise tax is being requested, the following requirements apply:
The parties involved in the transfer of the vehicle must be members of immediate family:
Spouse
Son or Daughter
Adopted Son or Daughter
Grandson or Granddaughter
Stepson or Stepdaughter
Mother or Father
Stepmother or Stepfather
Brother or Sister
Half Brother or Half Sister
Grandmother or Grandfather
Son-in-law or Daughter-in-law
Mother-in-law or Father-in-law
Aunt or Uncle (65 years old or older) to niece or nephew.

Guide To Donating Your Car for Charitable

At Charity Navigator, our primary purpose is helping America's donors make informed giving decisions when they part with their hard-earned dollars by writing a check to charity. In the past few years, however, more and more donors are attempting to help themselves, and help others, by donating their used automobiles to charity. This has become a massive business. In the year 2000, nearly ¾'s of a million people took a car donation deduction on their federal tax returns, thusly lowering their taxes by over $650 million.
As America's car donation system is currently construed, it is easy for donors to benefit greatly by donating their cars, albeit with a little risk. By following these 10 Charity Navigator Tips For Charitable Auto Donations, you can minimize that risk, and maximize the amount that actually gets to charity.
1. Find a Charity That Directly Accepts Car DonationsIf at all possible, avoid the for-profit intermediary organizations that advertise so pervasively to handle your car donations. When you work with one of these organizations, they keep the vast majority of the dollars created from your donation. Even the most reputable of the agencies that handle these transactions keep nearly 50% of the car's value for their troubles (other, less scrupulous entities keep 90%, or even more). If you can find a charity that handles the transaction themselves, they can keep 100% of their profits. It's possible that the charities you already support have a car-donation program that you don't know about. Check with them first.
2. If Your Charity Doesn't Accept Cars, Take the Time to Find a Charity That Does, and Still Does Work You RespectRemember that you're still making a charitable donation, and don't simply give your automobile away to any charity, just because they're a charity. Do a little research, and find a high-performing charity that does the kind of work you like, in the region you wish to target, and does that work well.

3. If It Runs, Drive the Car to the CharityWorthy charities are going to have to pay someone else to handle a pick-up or a tow. This is yet another cost that cuts into the amount that gets to that organization's programs. If you can get the car to them yourself, do it.
4. If You Have to Use a Intermediary Agency, Research the Percentage that Gets to CharityThe IRS does not require the car donation agencies to contribute a set amount of the auto's proceeds to the intended charities; that amount is negotiated between the charities and the handlers. Try to find an agency that maximizes that amount, and call the charity to confirm that number before you give. The charities are reluctant to criticize the middlemen, because they don't want to lose the dollars they do receive, but state attorney generals are beginning to investigate and even prosecute these for-profit middlemen, for holding themselves out as charities and misleading the public on the amount that is actually reaching charitable causes.
5. Make Sure Your Intended Organization is a 501 (c) (3)While many organizations can claim non-profit status, donations to 501 (c) (4) organizations are generally not tax-deductible. These are political organizations with permission to lobby our government; like Disabled American Veterans or the National Rifle Association. Make sure your intended recipient has 501 (c) (3) public charity status.
6. Transfer the Car Correctly to the CharitySome charities will ask you to leave the assignment of ownership space on the charity donation papers blank, so they don't have to re-title the auto. If your charity asks this of you, find another charity. If you don't formally sign your car over to the designated nonprofit, you will be held responsible for any parking tickets that are subsequently incurred, or liable if it's used in a crime. Remember, the charity you give the car to will probably not use your car to deliver meals to the needy, but will simply sell it as quickly as possible. When someone buys it from them at auction and doesn't bother to register that car, it's still yours in the eyes of the law.
7. Value Your Car CorrectlyDue to the proliferation of car donations, the IRS became increasingly concerned about how taxpayers valued the vehicles they donated to charity. Over the last few years, the agency stepped up their audits in this area and began to advocate for changes to the laws that govern such deductions. With the passage of the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004, those changes have come. Starting with your 2005 tax return, you will no longer be able to deduct the published fair market value of vehicles worth more than $500. Under the new rules, your deduction will be determined once your car is sold and the charity sends you a receipt indicating the exact amount your car garnered at auction.

8. Complete Your PaperworkIf your car is worth more than $500, you must complete IRS Form 8283 and attach it to your yearly taxes.
9. Use Fair Market Value (FMV) for the CarThere are several exceptions which allow you to use the Kelley Blue Book or a NADA guide, but you must use the FMV, not simply the highest value listed for the year and make of your car. Use the FMV when:
  • instead of selling the vehicle, the charity keeps and uses it,
  • the charity makes improvements to the car before selling it,
  • your car is sold at a discounted price to a person with a low income,
  • or if the car is worth less than $500.
And remember to always get a receipt when you donate the car. Again, the IRS is watching this area very closely.
10. Take the Time to Get It RightIt is true that the biggest winner in the car donation game is usually the donor, and not the charity recipient. But if you take your time, ignore the quick and easy television appeals, and find a reputable, high-performing charity that will make the most of your donation, we can all emerge victorious.

Donating a Car to Charity

Donating a car is a way to support a charitable organization while still reaping an economic benefit through a tax deduction. All donors should be aware that tax deductions for used automobiles, boats or airplanes are available only to those individuals who donate to a qualified charity and who itemize deductions on their tax returns. Following are some tips to consider when deciding whether to donate your car to charity.
Do make sure that you are donating to an eligible organization. Tax deductions are available for donations made to §501(c)(3) organizations, public charities which the Internal Revenue Service has determined to be tax-exempt. To verify an organization's qualified status, contact the Public Charities Division at (617) 727-2200, ext. 2101; the IRS Tax Exempt/Government Entities Customer Service at 1-877-829-5500; or look for IRS Publication 78 in your local library's reference section or on the IRS website. Churches, synagogues, temples, mosques, and governments are not required to register with the Non-Profit Organizations/Public Charities Division or to apply to the IRS for tax-exempt determination. They may not be listed in Publication 78, but donations to these institutions are tax deductible.
Do ask the charity plenty of questions. Find out what the organization's mission is and how your donation will help it. Ask if your donation can go to a particular program or service that interests you or whether it must go only into the charity's general fund. Do not donate to an organization that avoids talking about its charitable purpose or refuses to send you information.
Do ask what the charity will do with your car. Some charities refurbish cars and give them to people in need. Some technical schools use cars in their auto shop programs. Other organizations simply resell the car or sell its parts and use the proceeds for their charitable purposes.
Do ask if the charity handles all aspects of your donation. Many charities contract with for-profit companies to handle all the details of motor vehicle donations. If this is the case, ask how the money from your car donation is split between your charity and the for-profit company.
Deduct only the amount allowed by law. Section 884 of the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 added sections 170(f)(12) and 6720 to the Internal Revenue Code and changed the rules for donations of motor vehicles, boats, and airplanes beginning in 2005. There are different rules concerning deductions, depending on the value of the car and on whether the charity will keep and use the car or whether it will sell the car (or its parts). The IRS has published "A Donor's Guide to Vehicle Donations" (Publication 4303), which details the new rules. You can obtain Publication 4303 from the IRS at your local IRS office, or by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676), or from the IRS website.
Do have your motor vehicle appraised by a qualified professional appraiser if it is worth more than $5,000.
Do make sure you have the title to your vehicle. A charity should not accept your donation without a title. To obtain a duplicate title, visit your local Registry of Motor Vehicles branch or visit the Registry's website.
Do take responsibility for transferring the title at the time of the donation. An assignment of title should be made only to the charity or an authorized private, for-profit agent of the charity.  The for-profit agent of the charity should be subject to the charity’s oversight in order for the agency to be valid for tax-deductibility purposes.  The IRS has published "A Charity’s Guide to Vehicle Donations" (Publication 4302), which details the required terms of the agency relationship. You can obtain Publication 4302 from the IRS at your local IRS office, or by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676), or from IRS website .
On the back side of your title, you should assign the title to the charity or an authorized agent of the charity, enter the correct mileage from the odometer, and sign and date the form. Be sure to make and keep a copy of both sides of your title.
Do maintain a personal record of your donation. Items that should be included in your record include:
  • The written contemporaneous acknowledgment from the charity;
  • The name and address of the organization to which you contributed;
  • The date and place where your vehicle was picked up;
  • A reasonably detailed description of the donated car or a photograph of the car;
  • The fair market value of the car at the time of the contribution and how that value was calculated;
  • A signed copy of the appraisal, if the motor vehicle was appraised;
  • Any terms or conditions attached to the car donation;
  • How you obtained the car (by purchase, gift, inheritance, etc.) and the date; and
  • A copy of your title, registration, and any receipts you are given by the tow company or the charity.
  • Health Care

  • Health Care Division:In 2007, Attorney General Martha Coakley formed a new division within the Attorney General’s Office to place a heightened focus on promoting the interests of consumers as Massachusetts undertook its landmark health reform effort. Since then, the Health Care Division has been at the forefront of health care advocacy, enforcement, and consumer protection.  The Division  enforces health care laws to protect the rights of Massachusetts consumers and to halt unfair or deceptive practices that may harm consumers. The Health Care Division has returned tens of millions of dollars to Massachusetts through successful litigation against numerous health plans, health care providers, and pharmaceutical companies.

Project Child Save Mission...

Our motto is: "Never leave a child behind."
Our pledge is: "If necessary I will give all my tomorrows for one child's today."
Child pornography is big business, second in revenue only to drug trafficking. Many of the major operations are located in Central and South America. Brazil is considered by some as the satanic capital of the world, heavily involved in child pornography and the selling of children to pedophiles that use them as sexual slaves. These children are constantly drugged, mostly with morphine, and tortured until they are no longer desirable. Then they are sold into prostitution or used in black market "snuff films."
"A blond, blue-eyed child is sold on today's market has, in some cases, reached six figures," says Ty Ritter, Project Child Save's President and founder. "In the greater Los Angeles area, approximately 400 children disappear without a trace each year. The FBI once reported this figure but later denied it, so I investigated county by county to determine the truth of this statistic."
With your help we can stop these predators and save innocent children from senseless abuse, torture, and death. Help us to end this madness.

  • Who we are

As a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry that builds with people in need regardless of race or religion, we welcome volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds.
We have more than 1,500 local affiliates in the United States and more than 70 national organizations around the world. Together, we have helped to build or repair more than 800,000 houses and serve more than 4 million people worldwide.

There are nearly 2 billion people around the world who live in slum housing and more than 100 million are homeless. Habitat helps by building or renovating simple, decent houses in partnership with those in need.
Families left homeless by natural disasters, war and civil unrest often face dire housing situations as they struggle to rebuild their lives. We provide shelter and housing assistance to help these families recover.

The history of Habitat

Koinonia Farm
The concept that grew into Habitat for Humanity International was born at Koinonia Farm, a small, interracial, Christian community outside of Americus, Georgia. Koinonia Farm was founded in 1942 by farmer and biblical scholar Clarence Jordan.
The Fullers first visited Koinonia in 1965. They had recently left a successful business and an affluent lifestyle in Montgomery, Alabama to begin a new life of Christian service.
At Koinonia, Jordan and Fuller developed the concept of "partnership housing." The concept centered on those in need of adequate shelter working side by side with volunteers to build simple, decent houses.
The Fund for HumanityThe houses would be built at no profit and interest would not be charged on the loans. Building costs would be financed by a revolving fund called “The Fund for Humanity.”
The fund's money would come from the new homeowners' house payments, no-interest loans provided by supporters and money earned by fund-raising activities. The monies in the Fund for Humanity would be used to build more houses.
Inception of Habitat for Humanity In 1968, Koinonia laid out 42 half-acre house sites with four acres reserved as a community park and recreational area. Capital was donated from around the country to start the work.
Homes were built and sold to families in need at no profit and no interest. The basic model of Habitat for Humanity was begun.
ZaireIn 1973, the Fullers decided to apply the Fund for Humanity concept in developing countries. The Fuller family moved to Mbandaka, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo.) The Fullers' goal was to offer affordable yet adequate shelter to 2,000 people. After three years of hard work to launch a successful house building program, the Fullers returned to the United States.
Expansion into Habitat for Humanity InternationalIn September 1976, Millard and Linda called together a group of supporters to discuss the future of their dream. Habitat for Humanity International as an organization was born at this meeting. The eight years that followed, vividly described in Millard Fuller's book, “Love in the Mortar Joints,” proved that the vision of a housing ministry was workable. Faith, hard work and direction set HFHI on its successful course.
Phenomenal growthIn 1984, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn took their first Habitat work trip, the Jimmy Carter Work Project, to New York City. Their personal involvement in Habitat's ministry brought the organization national visibility and sparked interest in Habitat's work across the nation. HFHI experienced a dramatic increase in the number of new affiliates around the country.
Habitat todayThrough the work of Habitat, thousands of low-income families have found new hope in the form of affordable housing. Churches, community groups and others have joined together to successfully tackle a significant social problem―decent housing for all.
Today, Habitat has helped build or repair more than 800,000 houses and served more than 4 million people around the world.

Tips for Choosing the Best Car Donation Program

There are hundreds of car donation programs on the internet making heartfelt appeals for vehicles, but only a small number of these programs actually make a difference to the charity.Car Donation Wizard wants you to know that we know that you have choices and we are happy to offer complete clarity on where your car donation is going, who it's helping, and how it's going to get there. Call us anytime at (877) 957-2277 for more information or to donate a car to one of our amazing nonprofit partners today.

TIPS BEFORE YOU DONATE A CAR TO CHARITY:

  • Make sure the charity is an organization that you know and trust. There are thousands of organizations that accept car donations. Before you choose to donate, remember that all charities are not created equal. Look for an organization whose work you recognize as benefiting the community or the world. Be concerned about “charities” that have cute-sounding names or might sound similar to a charity you know (for example, Habitat for Humans instead of Habitat for Humanity).
  • Ask how much the charity will receive. The charity has a responsibility to best manage your vehicle donation. Ask how much of the gross proceeds will go back to the charity after you donate a car to them. If the organization will only list the percentage of net proceeds, then your car donation could be largely wasted. Several published reports have clearly established that most car donation programs return between 15 and 35% of the gross back to the charity, but they report it as 50 to 70% of the net. This could be the difference between the charity of your choice receiving $1,000 or $150 for your car donation.

    Car Donation Wizard returns between 75% and 80% of the GROSS from each auto donation back to the charity.
  • Once you've decided to donate a car to charity, sign the title directly over to the charity or their agent. All states have very clear regulations about transfer of ownership for vehicles. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRUCUMSTANCES, LEAVE THE ‘BUYER’ SECTION OF THE TITLE BLANK. By leaving the title blank, you allow anyone to transfer the title directly from you to the next buyer. There are two consequences of this oversight.
    1. The donor can remain liable for the vehicle. This means liable to the buyer and possibly liable for the actions of the buyer if the vehicle is never correctly transferred.
    2. The charity might not receive any credit for the vehicle donation. By signing directly to the charity or their legal contractual agent, you make it much more likely that the vehicle will actually be used for the charitable purpose that you designate.
  • Ask how your car donation will be handled. You'll want to know that the vehicle will be picked up and transported by properly licensed and insured towing companies and that the legal transfer of the donated vehicle will be handled by a licensed dealer contracted by the charity.
  • Ask how and where the money will be spent. This question should be easily answered. You should search for the charity or agency that makes the best use of the funds from your auto donation. BEWARE of charity car donation programs that promise to send proceeds to any organization without having a direct relationship. All charities are not created equal, and all car donation programs are not run with the same attention to donor wishes.
  • donate your vehicle.

  • Then turn your old car into a donation that will make a difference right here at home!

    Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton is now accepting vehicle donations, giving you an easy way to help your local community with your unwanted car. No matter what the make or model, whether it's running or not, we'll come and pick up your car or truck and use it for a good cause. In return, you not only get the feeling of helping a local charity, but also receive an income tax deduction as well. In some cases, the deduction may be worth more than what the dealer will give you!

    So don't let your old car or truck be a liability any longer. Fill out the form below and we'll help you put your vehicle to good use. Once we receive your information, we'll call you to confirm your information and schedule a time for us to pick up your vehicle.
